Nothing adds years to your appearance quite like wrinkles do, but luckily, there are lots of things you can do to prevent and reduce them.

Regardless of whether you’re just starting to develop wrinkles or you’ve had them for years, no one wants to deal with wrinkles. Luckily, you have Rejuvime on your side. We are your go-to anti-aging clinic in Baton Rouge, and we offer a variety of treatments that can help you look and feel more youthful. In addition to our anti-aging treatments, there are many different things you can do to prevent and reduce your wrinkles:

#1. Minimize Sun Exposure

Sun exposure is the number one thing that causes wrinkles. The more you can minimize your sun exposure, the fewer wrinkles you’ll develop. One study found that sun exposure was even more important than genetics when it comes to aging well, by studying identical twins, and it found that the sibling who avoided sun exposure more often had fewer wrinkles and looked younger overall than the sibling who did not limit sun exposure.

#2. Wear Sunscreen

Although sun exposure causes wrinkles and should be minimized, you can’t avoid the sun forever. In fact, sun exposure does have some health benefits, like the production of vitamin D, as well as helping to maintain a normal circadian rhythm. However, when you do go out in the sun, it’s important to protect yourself from the damaging UV rays that can not only cause wrinkles but can also cause cancer. Wearing sunscreen is an easy way to reap the benefits of sun exposure while minimizing the risks.

One of the most important things about wearing sunscreen is remembering to reapply it often. Putting sunscreen on your face in the morning will not ensure all-day protection. It’s also important to note that sunscreen in makeup is often nowhere near as concentrated as the regular sunscreen, so even if your makeup has SPF, wear sunscreen underneath it.

#3. Get Plenty of Sleep

They don’t call it beauty sleep for no reason. Sleep is essential, not just for your health but also for your appearance. When you are properly rested, it allows your body to produce an adequate amount of human growth hormone (HGH), which helps to keep the skin supple, elastic and free of wrinkles. It’s not always easy to get enough sleep at night, but practicing good sleep hygiene can help you enjoy more rest on a nightly basis and reap the beauty benefits of a good night’s sleep.

#4. Stop Smoking

If sun exposure is the number one cause of wrinkles, smoking is probably the number two cause. Wrinkles are just one of the many side effects of smoking that can add years on to your appearance. Smoking also causes sun spots, uneven skin tone, sagging skin and many other effects linked to old age. Quitting smoking is not only a great choice for your health, it can also help you retain your youthful appearance for much longer.

#5. Wear Sunglasses

The skin around your eyes is incredibly delicate, which makes it prone to wrinkles from sun exposure, as well as repeated motions, like squinting. Wearing sunglasses helps you to see clearly on a sunny day and protects your eyes from sun damage, but it can also help to keep you looking young. Sunglasses not only help you see without squinting, they also protect the delicate skin around your eyes from sun-damage-induced wrinkles.

#6. Sleep on Your Back

Not only is getting enough sleep essential to retaining your youthful glow, sleeping in the right position is also important. Some positions are  better for wrinkle-prevention than others. For example, sleeping on your side can actually cause wrinkles to develop in the chin and cheeks, whereas, sleeping face-down can lead to a furrowed brow. The best sleeping position to prevent wrinkles is on your back. If you have trouble sleeping on your back, invest in a silk pillowcase.

These are just a few of the many things you can do in your day to day life to reduce future wrinkles and minimize the wrinkles you already have, and in our next blog, we’ll be going over a few more.
