Whether 60 is the new 50 or not, you can maximize the quality of your life at all ages by understanding the aging process for women so you can maintain your physical and emotional health as you get older. The good news is that you have a lot of control over how you age, which may include meeting with one of our hormone specialists in Louisiana or Mississippi.
Stages of Aging
In Your 20s
You’re at your peak physically in your 20s, when estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone reach their maximum levels before they begin declining as you near age 30. This is the time when good skincare habits will pay off later—and that includes applying sunscreen daily.
In Your 30s
You may notice a stray gray hair or faint signs of crow’s feet or other facial aging during your early 30s. These are some of the first changes associated with growing older. A slowing metabolism makes it more difficult to keep weight off, and fertility decreases as hormone production declines. Bone density and muscle mass also begin to decline. Many women are busier than ever during their 30s, but it’s also more important than ever to carve out time for exercise.
In Your 40s
You may notice signs of progression toward menopause, such as menstrual irregularity, sometime in your 40s. This is a transition stage called perimenopause. The level of estrogen in your body rises and falls unevenly during perimenopause. This can result in symptoms such as mood swings, declined libido, and more significant weight gain. Perimenopause can last years. Once you’ve gone through 12 consecutive months without a menstrual period, you’ve officially reached menopause, and the perimenopause period is over.
In Your 50s and Beyond
Women often enter menopause in their 50s and begin experiencing hot flashes, reduced energy, memory loss, insomnia, uncomfortable sex, and other symptoms of hormonal imbalance. You can minimize these symptoms by leading a healthy lifestyle and getting treatments such as estrogen therapy.
