Hormones & Age: Understanding the Ups and Downs

Understanding the ups and downs of hormones and age

You change through the years—and so do your hormones. The endocrine system adapts throughout our different stages of life, creating fluctuations in metabolism, sex drive, and overall mood. While age impacts us all, you don’t have to suffer through it. Anti-aging solutions, such as hormone replacement therapy,  help our Baton Rouge patients feel great at every stage of life.

At Rejuvime Medical, we think everyone deserves to feel comfortable in their own skin. Here are a few common problems men and women face as they age, along with rejuvenating solutions we provide here at the practice.

Menopause (Women 50+) | Bioidentical Hormone Replacement

Menopause is a condition triggered by declining levels of female reproductive hormones. As women age, these hormones naturally taper off and menstruation ceases. Because all women eventually experience menopause, many symptoms are well-known and the condition itself can be self-diagnosed. A few common signs that many people experience are:

  • Hot flashes
  • Low libido
  • Irritability
  • Sleep issues
  • Vaginal dryness

Bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) can balance out the hormones that the body lacks due to age. These extra hormones help stabilize the system and reduce the symptoms of menopause. By supplementing hormones that the body is currently underproducing—such as estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone—patients can potentially regain energy levels similar to that of a younger person. We offer a number of treatments for women designed to support optimal health during this phase of life.

Andropause (Men 60+) | Testosterone Replacement

Andropause is a collection of symptoms caused by declining levels of testosterone. It is important to remember, however, that andropause isn’t “male menopause”—in fact, not all men will experience this condition in their lifetime. For men that do experience andropause, a few common symptoms include:

  • Decreased muscle mass
  • Less strength
  • Low libido
  • Decreased energy levels
  • Memory issues

Much like with menopause, andropause can be eased by supplementing the body with the hormone it begins to lack: testosterone. Testosterone therapy can relieve many problems men face as they begin to age. By boosting testosterone and encouraging production, the body can potentially regain muscle mass, bone density, and overall energy. We offer numerous treatments for men, in addition to testosterone therapy, that can boost energy levels and improve quality of life.

Thyroid Problems (All Genders, All Ages) | Bioidentical Hormone Replacement

The thyroid is a small gland located at the front of the neck which produces hormones that control metabolism, body temperature, and muscle strength. Just as other parts of the endocrine system are impacted by age, the thyroid can experience issues as well. A few signs of thyroid trouble include:

  • Temperature tolerance issues
  • Weight fluctuation
  • Mood swings
  • Low energy levels

Triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) are the 2 main thyroid hormones that help regulate your metabolism. Thyroid therapy can help maintain the T3 and T4 levels your thyroid might struggle with. As there is no cookie-cutter way of solving this issue, your doctor can customize a treatment plan that will best support healthy thyroid function for you.

Hormone changes are a natural part of the aging process. But that doesn’t mean you can’t improve and replenish your body.
