What Does the Thyroid Gland Do?
The thyroid gland, located in the neck just below your Adam’s apple (laryngeal prominence), plays a major role in your metabolism—the process of how your body transforms the food you consume into energy. It helps regulate a range of functions by steadily releasing hormones into the bloodstream, ensuring the cardiovascular, nervous, and digestive systems all work properly.
The thyroid relies on iodine to make hormones, so getting enough iodine in your diet is important because the body doesn’t produce it naturally.
Aging & Thyroid Function

Thyroid disorders become more common as people get older, and hypothyroidism (when the thyroid underproduces hormones) is much more common than hyperthyroidism (when the thyroid overproduces hormones). But since symptoms associated with the natural aging process mimic symptoms of an underactive thyroid gland, hypothyroidism may go undiagnosed.
