Men's Health After 50: How Former NFL Player Eddie Kennison Reclaimed His Energy and Wellness

Mariah Butcher, FNP-C • October 28, 2026

Persistent fatigue, brain fog, stubborn weight gain, and declining physical performance can affect men over 50, even those who maintain an active lifestyle. While these changes are sometimes associated with aging, they can also signal underlying health concerns worth evaluating.

For former LSU football standout and 13-year NFL veteran Eddie Kennison, these symptoms became difficult to ignore. Despite exercising regularly and maintaining healthy habits, he struggled with exhaustion, concentration, and changes in his body composition.

In a recent episode of The Consult Before The Cut Podcast, Eddie shared how his experience with personalized hormone therapy, medical weight management, and other wellness treatments at Rejuvime Medical changed his approach to health.

As Eddie's nurse practitioner at Rejuvime Medical, I joined him to discuss his progress, the importance of ongoing medical monitoring, and why feeling better meant more than improving his physical appearance.

Why Do Some Men Experience Fatigue and Physical Changes After 50?

Men over 50 may experience persistent fatigue, reduced muscle mass, weight changes, and difficulty concentrating due to hormonal changes, metabolic conditions, sleep problems, or other health factors. These symptoms can develop even when someone maintains regular exercise and nutrition habits.

Eddie Kennison understood the importance of physical conditioning. Originally from Lake Charles, Louisiana, he played football at LSU, earned six All-American honors in track, and spent 13 seasons in the NFL before retiring in 2008.

After retirement, Eddie continued to run several miles a day, work out, and watch his diet. However, he noticed changes that exercise alone wasn't addressing.

His energy declined, stubborn abdominal fat remained, and his ability to concentrate became increasingly difficult. Eventually, his fatigue was severe enough that he took medical leave from work.

His experience illustrates an important distinction: maintaining healthy habits is essential, but those habits do not eliminate the possibility of underlying medical concerns.

Can Hormone Imbalances Cause Fatigue and Brain Fog in Men?

Low testosterone and other hormonal changes can contribute to fatigue, reduced libido, decreased muscle mass, and difficulty concentrating in men. However, these symptoms are not specific to hormone imbalance and require a comprehensive evaluation.

In my experience as a nurse practitioner at Rejuvime Medical, laboratory results are only part of the clinical picture. Understanding how a patient feels, functions, sleeps, and responds to exercise is equally important when evaluating symptoms and determining appropriate next steps.

Common concerns that may prompt further evaluation include:

For Eddie, fatigue and mental fog were among his most disruptive symptoms. He described struggling to get through the workday and to stay mentally present while helping his son with homework.

These symptoms can have several causes, including thyroid disorders, sleep apnea, medication effects, and metabolic conditions. Identifying the underlying cause is essential before recommending treatment.

How Can Personalized Hormone Therapy and Wellness Treatments Support Men's Health?

Personalized men's health treatment begins with identifying specific symptoms, reviewing laboratory results, and determining which therapies are medically appropriate for the individual. Not every patient needs hormone replacement therapy, medical weight loss, or multiple treatments.

When Eddie first came to see me at Rejuvime Medical, we evaluated his symptoms, health history, laboratory results, and personal goals. Our priority was to understand what was contributing to his fatigue and physical changes so we could develop an individualized treatment plan.

His priorities included improving energy, maintaining physical activity, addressing body composition, and supporting his long-term health.

During the podcast, Eddie and I discussed several components of his individualized treatment plan.

Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT)

Testosterone therapy may help improve symptoms in men with clinically confirmed testosterone deficiency. Treatment requires appropriate diagnostic testing and ongoing monitoring.

GLP-1 medication

GLP-1 receptor agonists can support weight management and blood sugar regulation in eligible patients. Certain medications also have demonstrated cardiovascular benefits in specific populations.

Peptide-based treatments

Eddie also discussed receiving peptide-based treatments as part of his wellness program. Some peptides are being investigated for effects on metabolism, body composition, and recovery, but evidence varies considerably by compound.

Treatments such as BPC-157 and TB-500 are not FDA-approved for human therapeutic use, and their safety and effectiveness have not been established through adequate clinical trials.

Eddie's treatment plan also included other therapies discussed during the episode. His reported experience reflects his individual care and should not be interpreted as evidence that every component contributed to his improvements.

What Results Did Eddie Kennison Experience After Starting Treatment?

Eddie Kennison reported improvements in energy, concentration, physical activity, and body composition during approximately 13 months of treatment at Rejuvime Medical. His experience was documented through follow-up visits, laboratory monitoring, and his own reports of how he felt.

During the podcast, Eddie described several milestones:

  • Around six months: He reported losing approximately 12 pounds and noticing changes in his midsection.
  • Around eight months: He reported losing approximately 22 pounds, experiencing more energy, and returning to more consistent workouts.
  • Around 13 months: He described improved concentration, greater daily stamina, and fewer physical limitations during exercise.

One of the most meaningful changes for Eddie was becoming more present with his family.

Previously, he described feeling exhausted after taking his son to school. During the follow-up interview, he explained that he could now help with homework, read books, and participate in activities without the same level of fatigue.

He also reported improvements in exercise-related discomfort affecting his wrists, shoulders, and knees.

These are Eddie's personal observations. Because his treatment involved multiple interventions alongside continued exercise and lifestyle habits, the effects of individual therapies cannot be determined from his experience alone.

Why Is Ongoing Medical Monitoring Important for Men's Hormone Health?

Ongoing medical monitoring helps providers evaluate treatment response, identify potential side effects, and make adjustments based on laboratory results and patient symptoms. This is particularly important for hormone replacement therapy and medications that affect metabolism.

As I discussed during the podcast, treatment is not a one-time decision. Every patient responds differently, which is why I emphasize regular follow-up, laboratory monitoring, and ongoing communication to determine whether adjustments are medically appropriate.

At Rejuvime Medical, individualized care may include:

  1. Reviewing symptoms, medical history, and personal health goals.
  2. Obtaining appropriate laboratory testing and evaluating potential underlying conditions.
  3. Discussing treatment options, expected benefits, limitations, and risks.
  4. Monitoring symptoms and relevant health markers throughout treatment.
  5. Adjusting the care plan when clinically appropriate.

For Eddie, cardiovascular health was especially important because of his family history of heart disease and high cholesterol.

We also reviewed Eddie's cholesterol and other health markers as part of his ongoing care, with his long-term cardiovascular health remaining an important consideration.

Medical monitoring helps ensure that treatments remain appropriate as health needs change. For men receiving testosterone therapy, this can include monitoring testosterone levels, blood counts, and other relevant measures.

Why Does Provider-Guided Treatment Matter More Than Following Online Wellness Trends?

Provider-guided treatment offers individualized medical evaluation, appropriate testing, and follow-up that generalized online wellness recommendations cannot provide. This is especially important when considering prescription medications, hormones, or experimental therapies.

During the podcast, Eddie emphasized the value of having healthcare professionals available to answer questions and help him understand his results.

Rather than selecting treatments based solely on internet recommendations, he worked with our Rejuvime care team to develop and reassess his plan.

This distinction matters because symptoms such as fatigue, brain fog, and weight changes can have overlapping causes. A treatment that is appropriate for one patient may be unnecessary or potentially harmful for another.

Medical supervision does not eliminate all risks, particularly for treatments lacking established safety evidence. However, appropriate evaluation, informed consent, and follow-up are essential parts of responsible care.

Where Can Men in Baton Rouge and Lake Charles Get Evaluated for Hormone and Metabolic Health?

Men in Baton Rouge, Lake Charles, and surrounding Louisiana communities can visit Rejuvime Medical for individualized evaluations of hormone-related symptoms, metabolic health, and wellness concerns.

Rejuvime Medical provides access to medical professionals who can evaluate concerns such as fatigue, low testosterone, changes in body composition, and declining physical performance.

Eddie's connection to both communities makes his story especially relevant to men across South Louisiana. Born and raised in Lake Charles and a former LSU athlete, he understands the importance of staying active while managing the physical changes that come with age.

His experience also highlights why a personalized approach matters. Whether someone is a former professional athlete, an active parent, or simply looking to understand persistent symptoms, the first step is identifying what may be contributing to those changes.

How Can Men Over 50 Take the First Step Toward Better Health?

Men over 50 experiencing persistent fatigue, brain fog, reduced strength, or unexplained changes in weight should consider a medical evaluation to identify possible underlying causes. Treatment decisions should be based on symptoms, clinical findings, medical history, and individual health goals.

For Eddie Kennison, improving his health was about more than losing weight or returning to the gym. It was about having the energy and mental clarity to be present for his children and grandchildren.

His experience reinforces an important message: taking care of your health is an ongoing process, and understanding your body's changing needs is part of that journey.
