Why Is the Tirzepatide Precaution Specifically About Oral Birth Control?

Zepbound and Mounjaro both contain tirzepatide, so this precaution applies to both medications.

If you take oral birth control and are starting tirzepatide or increasing your dose, talk with the healthcare provider managing your contraception about whether you need additional protection.

Do not stop or change prescribed birth control without speaking with your healthcare provider.

Do All GLP-1 Medications Affect Birth Control?

Not all GLP-1 medications have the same FDA guidance regarding oral hormonal birth control.

Semaglutide, the active ingredient in Wegovy and Ozempic, does not carry the same specific oral contraceptive precaution.

So rather than asking only, "Do GLP-1 medications affect birth control?", a more useful question is: "Which GLP-1 medication am I taking, and what type of birth control am I using?"

Can You Get Pregnant While Taking a GLP-1 Medication?

GLP-1 medications are not contraceptives, and pregnancy is possible while taking them.

Wegovy's FDA prescribing information similarly states that semaglutide may cause fetal harm and should be discontinued when pregnancy is recognized if it is being used for weight reduction.

Human pregnancy data for these medications remain limited, so treatment decisions should be made with a healthcare professional rather than based on information from social media or anecdotal experiences.

How Long Before Pregnancy Should You Stop Semaglutide?

Current FDA labeling recommends discontinuing Wegovy at least two to three months before a planned pregnancy because semaglutide remains in the body for an extended period.

If pregnancy is something you may want in the near future:

• Tell your GLP-1 provider before starting treatment.

If you learn that you are pregnant while taking a GLP-1 medication, contact your prescribing provider and OB-GYN promptly.

An unintended pregnancy while taking a medication does not tell you what the pregnancy outcome will be. Your healthcare team can review the specific medication, dose, timing of exposure, and your medical history to determine the appropriate next steps.

What Should I Ask My Provider Before Increasing My Tirzepatide Dose?

Before increasing tirzepatide, women of reproductive age should make sure their provider knows what form of birth control they use and whether pregnancy is part of their near-term plans.
