Kybella, A Solution for Submental Fat, AKA “The Double Chin”

Submental fat, or “double-chin”, represents a cosmetic change in patients in all ages and genders. Interestingly enough, it occurs regardless of body mass. This is because we have localized fat deposits all over our bodies, but because this one is under our chin and is in part of our facial outline, it is exceptionally noticeable. That being said, you don’t necessarily have to pack on the pounds before you notice a double chin!

Over the centuries, noblemen and women went to great lengths to cover their double chins using ruff collars, makeup, and other types of elaborate clothing.

More recently, we’ve had invasive surgery options, like liposuction, that physically remove fat in the chin/neck area. The drawbacks to this were downtime, possible bruising, and swelling after the surgical procedure.

Fortunately, today we don’t need to rely on fancy collars to hide our double chin. Now we have Kybella, the first and only FDA-approved injection to improve the appearance of moderate to severe submental fullness. Kybella’s active ingredient is deoxycholic acid (DC), a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. In high doses, DC leads to solubilization and cell eradication (basically, dissolving fat tissue). When injected into the fat beneath the chin, Kybella destroys fat cells, resulting in a noticeable reduction in fullness under the chin. Once destroyed, these cells can no longer store or accumulate fat, so further treatment is not expected once you reach your desired aesthetic goal. No surgery, no downtime, and the procedure takes around 15-20 minutes to complete.
